On Tuesday, liberty conservative Thomas Massie filed the Safe Students Act which would repeal the federal Gun-Free School Zones Act (GFSZA).
Massie later appeared on 55KRC to discuss this legislation and its overall aim of eliminating the “one-size-fits-all federal ban on guns in school zones.”
Massie’s response to the Virginia Beach shooting is a stark contrast to what the media and its political allies are calling for. Many ignore that the murderer, DeWayne Craddock, obtained his gun through the same legal means that millions of Americans must go through to exercise their supposed “right” to self-defense. Any additional gun control would not have stopped Craddock from committing this atrocity.
The Kentucky Congressman stepped up to the plate big time by offering a real solution to America’s shooting dilemma. His Safe Students Act is a genuinely pro-liberty alternative that gives power back to schools and gets rid of a law that enables mass shooters to kill defenseless targets at will. Under this bill, the GFSZA gets scrapped, thus allowing teachers to carry guns for self-defense purposes.
During his time in Congress, Massie has repeatedly introduced legislation to abolish gun-free zones. After introducing a gun-free zones repeal in 2017, Massie asserted that “Gun-free school zones are ineffective. They make people less safe by inviting criminals into target-rich, no-risk environments. Gun-free zones prevent law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves, and create vulnerable populations that are targeted by criminals.”
Often ignored is the bipartisan nature of the passage of gun-free zone legislation. Democratic Party frontrunner Joe Biden introduced this legislation as a Senator, and Republican President George H.W. Bush signed this bill into law. Feelgood emotions aside, the GFSZA has been a resounding failure since it was enacted as law. Data show that 98 percent of mass shootings have occurred in gun-free zones, and schools tend to be the most high-profile areas targeted by deranged lunatics.
The GFSZA is close to approaching its 30th anniversary, which is a fitting time to repeal this failed piece of legislation. American schoolchildren deserve a safe school environment, and gun-free zones do nothing to promote that.
